I am not white passing I am ambiguous in some scenarios. For whatever reason people do not always identify me as black on sight. I have brown skin so I’ve never been confused for white. Except maybe on social media because that’s just a whole different issue.
But as a kid I was even darker than I am now. It is true that depending on the way I wore my hair or how much I went outside affected people’s perceptions of me. I am always fully cognizant that the majority of Black Americans cannot experience this. They don’t get to change people’s perceptions based on how they wear their hair or whether they go to the beach for a week. It’s a very weird space to be in to know that you can camouflage your own oppression if you so choose. But as your article reflects I don’t think it really matters whether I am ambiguous or your are white passing. What matters is that we are hyper vigilant about the ongoing racial oppression of Black Americans. To me that is the point. I don’t care about acceptance. I care about people telling the truth about what kind of society we live in. For me I hear every micro-aggression. Every word that tries to frame black people as the perpetrators and whiteness as the victim. I notice everything. And I think it is important that we point it out at every instance. Don’t let a single anti black narrative slide. No matter who it’s coming from.
