Your response is almost exactly what the article was trying to address.

Aren’t you tired of trying to understand conversations that involve race ? Many people appear to approach a 500 year legislated system with its foundations stretching across multiple continents and political systems. By what only appears to me as an “along for the ride learn as you go approach.” Instead of simply reading existing academic material that’s available to them. Is hoping to understand race by piecing together random commentary on the internet really the most efficient way to learn about …well anything? If you wanted to discuss sociology would you maybe read a few sociology books first? If you wanted to discuss economics would you perhaps take an introduction to economics course first? Or would the best strategy be to read a few comments on the internet and choose whichever comments that resonate with you or you agree with? Is that how you would attempt to learn about economics or sociology? So why would you take this approach with the subject of race-ism. It is a complicated field of study. It is not a 5 min tiktok video or a 30 minute YouTube rant.

One of the best ways for any American to understand the constructions of racial castes in the US is to download and read an introductory level course in Critical Race Theory. It is a law school course that analyzes different court cases that have legislated race in US. It helps an adult reader understand how their racial identity has been legislated by the court system by critically examining different cases and their outcomes. It is for those US citizens who feel like they really don’t understand race. It also helps people learn how to think critically about their own legislated identities.

Of course usually the people who need CRT the most and would benefit the most from it are too afraid to read it. Some people even think they know what it is about without ever cracking open a single page of theory. I’m sure that’s not you which is why I’ve offered it.
